Ghaznavid → Ghorid Transition

• Ghaznavids annexed Punjab up to Hansi; replaced Multan with Lahore as Islam's administrative/cultural/spiritual centre
• Both Ghaznavid & Ghorid dynasties ruled Indian territories from capitals outside India

Muhammad Ghori (1149–1206)

• Pushed frontier beyond the Yamuna
• 1185: captured Indus valley, conquered NW India incl. Bengal & Bihar
• 1192 — 2nd Battle of Tarain: defeated Prithviraj Chauhan, captured Ajmer & Delhi
• Most brilliant acquisition: established Muslim government in Bengal

Establishment of Delhi Sultanate

• After Ghori's death → Sultanate of Delhi, spans 1192–1526
• After Shihab-ud-din Ghori's death (1162–1206): successors cut off from Central Asian compatriots
• 1211: Delhi replaces Lahore as centre of Muslim power/culture — first Indian Muslim government in northern India → foundation of Indo-Muslim civilization
• 40 sultans ruled India — extended glory via architecture, communication, defence, education
• Sultans held authority for 300+ years despite succession wars — possible due to maintained ties with co-religionists across the frontier
