FPSC Part-III (Pedagogy) — Topic 4 of 4. Bloom's Taxonomy is a hierarchical classification of educational learning objectives, developed to help teachers write clearer objectives and design better assessments.
What Is Educational Taxonomy?
- Definition: the science and practice of categorizing and classifying learning objectives.
- Purpose: helps educators design curriculum, assess student learning, and set clear learning outcomes by organizing cognitive processes from simple to complex. Bloom's Taxonomy is the most famous example of an educational taxonomy, but the term itself is broader than just Bloom's specific model.
Origin
- Developed in 1956 by educational psychologist Benjamin S. Bloom and collaborators (Max Englehart, Edward Furst, Walter Hill, David Krathwohl), published as the "Taxonomy of Educational Objectives."
- Purpose: to classify learning objectives by complexity, from simple recall to complex judgment, so teaching and testing can target the right level of thinking.

Cognitive Domain — Original 1956 Taxonomy (Bottom to Top)
- Deals with: Head, Thinking, and Mental skills.
- Sub-groups: it has 6 sub-groups, classified according to level of complexity and specification (from simple recall to complex judgment).

Order (bottom → top): Knowledge → Comprehension → Application → Analysis → Synthesis → Evaluation. The bottom three (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application) are LOTS; the top three (Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation) are HOTS.
- Knowledge — recalling facts, terms, basic concepts (e.g., define, list, name, state).
- Comprehension — understanding meaning, explaining ideas (e.g., describe, explain, summarize).
- Application — using information in new, concrete situations (e.g., apply, solve, use, demonstrate).
- Analysis — breaking material into parts, seeing relationships (e.g., compare, differentiate, examine).
