I. Introduction to Islam

Concept of Islam

"Islam" derives from Arabic root s-l-m — meaning peace, submission, and safety/soundness
Technically: complete submission of one's will to Allah's will, in belief, worship, and conduct
Not merely a set of rituals — a comprehensive Deen (complete way of life) covering personal, social, economic, political, and spiritual dimensions
Quranic reference: "Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam" (Surah Al-Imran 3:19)

Importance of Din in Human Life

Din provides: a coherent worldview (Tawhid-based), a moral compass, purpose of life (worship/khilafah), and social order
Regulates relationship in three dimensions: Insan-Allah (man-God), Insan-Insan (man-man), Insan-Kainat (man-universe/environment)
Without Din, CSS answers often argue, human life risks moral relativism and lack of ultimate accountability — Din supplies both this-worldly ethics and akhirah (afterlife) accountability

Difference between Din and Religion (Mazhab)

Din	Religion (Mazhab/"Religion" in Western sense)
Comprehensive way of life — covers state, economy, law, ethics	Often limited to personal belief/ritual/worship
Divinely revealed, complete system (Islam as Din)	Can be man-made or evolved traditions

Key exam point: the Western/secular concept of "religion" as a private matter does not map onto Islam's self-understanding as Din — this distinction is a favorite short-answer/MCQ item

Distinctive Aspects of Islam

Tawhid (absolute monotheism) — no intermediaries between man and God
Universality — not tied to one race, region, or era (unlike many earlier religions restricted to a specific people)
Comprehensiveness — covers ibadat (worship) and muamalat (dealings/transactions) equally
