Essay question this maps to: "What are the major characteristics of the Mughal rule?"
Overview
Mughals ruled India 1526–1857 AD — richest and longest-lasting Muslim dynasty in the subcontinent
Set the stage for the finest arts & architecture in Muslim history of the region
Landmark monuments: Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Badshahi Masjid (Lahore) — rank with the great Safavid/Ottoman monuments
Founded by Babur; dynasty's epoch of order & strength left an indelible mark on the subcontinent's social, religious, and political institutions for 300+ years
Indo-Islamic Architecture — Two Main Categories
Delhi / Imperial Style — developed by the Sultans of Delhi, inspired by Islamic architecture of Central Asia (spaciousness, width)
Mughal Architectural Style — unique to the Mughals, a true fusion of Hindu + Islamic elements = "Indo-Islamic architecture"
How the fusion happened
Materials from demolished Hindu temples were sometimes reused in mosque construction
The dome was inspired by the Hindu temple roof — became the circular-top "Kalash", an inseparable part of Mughal architectural monuments
Sufis blended temple/court music into cultural life, enriching Mughal-era music
Artists on both sides (Hindu & Muslim) didn't shun each other's artistic influence
Who Built What
Babur: tried to recreate Persian garden beauty wherever he settled — introduced new plants, built baths, laid Persian-style gardens with a tank + pavilion, sited across rivers; keen interest in architecture; introduced new music styles like Khayal, Thumri, Tarana (North Indian, Persian-incorporated)
Humayun: founder of the "Mughal style culture" — merged early Safavid style (brought from Iran) with local subcontinent culture; deeply superstitious, fascinated by astrology/occult; reorganized administration on "mystically determined" principles (4 groups — e.g. "department of earth" = agriculture)
Jahangir: noted for paintings & monumental buildings; major contributor to Mughal gardens — developed Kashmir as a summer residence, built a garden on Lake Dal, Srinagar; Shalimar Bagh on the Dal Lake banks; also built Hiran Minar (Sheikhupura)
Shah Jahan: built the Taj Mahal (1632), in memory of wife Mumtaz Mahal — Persian + Islamic style, sandstone + white marble, interior inlaid with black/coloured stones, gold, precious stones; also built Lal Qila (Red Fort, 1639) — red sandstone exterior, gold/silver/white-marble interior
Akbar: architecture existed before (late Turkish rule) but got its due fame under Akbar — concentrated on red sandstone; blended foreign styles: high minarets, gardens, pillars; monuments lavishly decorated with gold, silver, diamonds, emeralds, rubies
