Part 1 — Guidelines Extracted from the Book

A. Overall Essay Structure

Every CSS essay is built from three blocks:

1. Introduction
2. Main Body
3. Conclusion

The Main Body itself breaks into five possible components (not all are mandatory every time):

• 2.1 Defining the Topic
• 2.2 Laying the Context (optional — only if background is genuinely needed)
• 2.3 Exposition of the Topic
• 2.4 Discussion: Developing the Main Argument
• 2.5 Solutions / Way Forward (optional — case by case)

B. The Outline

• The Outline is the blueprint — write it before the essay.
• The Thesis Statement should be placed directly under the Introduction heading in the Outline, labelled clearly as "Thesis Statement."
• The wording of the Thesis Statement in the Outline must match, word for word, the Thesis Statement used in the Introduction of the essay.
• Each major section gets a number (1, 2, 3...) and each argument under it gets a letter (a, b, c...); sub-evidence gets roman numerals (i, ii, iii...).
