Book reference: Islamic Studies Question Bank, Q.1 (p.viii) — "Present a detailed analysis of the steps taken by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for community and formation of society."
Introduction
Within a single generation the Prophet (PBUH) transformed a fractured, tribal, largely illiterate Arabian society into a unified, law-governed Ummah. This transformation followed a deliberate, staged strategy of community-building, both in Makkah (foundational/ideological) and Madinah (institutional/structural).
Steps Taken in the Makkan Period
- Ideological foundation — Tawheed: thirteen years spent purifying belief before any social/political structure was built, since a sound society must rest on a sound worldview.
- Character-building of the core group: early converts (Al-Sabiqun al-Awwalun) were trained in patience, sacrifice and brotherhood under persecution — forging a resilient nucleus.
- Dar al-Arqam: a private house used as the first organised centre for teaching and community formation away from public hostility.
Steps Taken After Hijrah (Madinan Period)
- Construction of Masjid an-Nabawi: the mosque was established immediately as the political, educational, judicial and social hub of the new community — not merely a place of ritual prayer.
- Muakhat (Brotherhood Pact): formally paired each Muhajir (migrant) with an Ansari (Madinan host), who shared home and wealth — a deliberate mechanism dissolving tribal identity into one bonded Ummah (cf. 49:10).
- Charter/Constitution of Medina: a written covenant binding Muslims, Jews and other Madinan tribes into one political community (Ummah Wahidah) with defined rights, duties and mutual defence obligations — widely regarded as history's first written constitution (see Topic II.2 — Diplomat).
- Institution-building: established the Suffah as a residential school (see Topic II.3 — Educator), organised the Bait-ul-Mal's early forms, and appointed judges/administrators to emerging Muslim territories.
- Economic integration: established the market of Madinah on terms free of the exploitative practices of the existing Jewish-dominated market, and encouraged productive trade among the Ansar and Muhajireen.
- Legal-moral order: progressively legislated on family law, commercial dealings, criminal justice and inheritance, replacing tribal custom ('Urf) with a revealed, uniform legal code.
- Defence and security: organised the community's collective defence (the Charter's mutual-defence clause, and later formal military organisation) to protect the fledgling society from external threat.
