Definition and Meaning

Salat (صلاۃ) linguistically means du'a (supplication) or connection. In Shariah it is the prescribed, ritual worship performed five times daily, consisting of specific postures (Qiyam, Ruku, Sujood) and recitations, facing the Qiblah. It is the second pillar of Islam and the first act of worship for which a believer will be held accountable on the Day of Judgement.

Categories of Salat

• Fard (obligatory): the five daily prayers (Fajr, Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha) and Jumu'ah (Friday prayer for men).
• Wajib: e.g. Witr and the two 'Eid prayers (per the Hanafi school).
• Sunnah Mu'akkadah: regularly and consistently performed by the Prophet (PBUH), e.g. the two Rak'at before Fajr.
• Nawafil/Nafl (voluntary): Tahajjud, Ishraq, Chasht, Tahiyyatul-Masjid and other optional prayers offered for additional reward.
• Special prayers: Salat al-Janazah (funeral), Salat al-Istisqa (rain), Salat al-Khusuf/Kusuf (eclipse).

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ

اردو ترجمہ: بےشک نماز بےحیائی اور برائی سے روکتی ہے۔

English: "Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing."

حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ

اردو ترجمہ: تمام نمازوں کی اور بیچ والی نماز کی حفاظت کرو اور اللہ کے حضور خشوع سے کھڑے ہو۔

English: "Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient."

أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ أَنَّ نَهَرًا بِبَابِ أَحَدِكُمْ يَغْتَسِلُ مِنْهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ خَمْسَ مَرَّاتٍ، هَلْ يَبْقَى مِنْ دَرَنِهِ شَيْءٌ؟

اردو ترجمہ: تمہارا کیا خیال ہے، اگر تم میں سے کسی کے دروازے پر ایک نہر ہو جس میں وہ روزانہ پانچ مرتبہ نہائے، کیا اس کے جسم پر کوئی میل باقی رہے گا؟

English: "Tell me, if there was a river at the door of one of you in which he bathed five times a day, would any trace of dirt remain on him?" — [the Companions said none would remain] — the Prophet said: "That is the example of the five [daily] prayers; through them Allah removes sins."

الصَّلَاةُ عِمَادُ الدِّينِ

اردو ترجمہ: نماز دین کا ستون ہے۔

English: "Prayer is the pillar of the religion."

Spiritual Benefits

• Direct, five-times-daily renewal of connection (Dhikr) with Allah — the antidote to spiritual heedlessness (Ghaflah).
• Cultivates Khushu' (humility and presence of heart) before God.
• A source of comfort in hardship — the Prophet (PBUH) would say, "Give us comfort with it, O Bilal" (i.e. the call to prayer) (Sunan Abu Dawud).

Moral Benefits

• Actively restrains immorality and wrongdoing (29:45) by habituating the believer to regular self-check and remembrance.
• Instils punctuality, discipline and organisation of daily life around fixed times.
