Definition and Meaning

Tazkiyah (تزکیہ) — self-purification — means cleansing the heart and soul (Nafs) of spiritual diseases (arrogance, envy, greed, hypocrisy, love of this world) and cultivating virtues (sincerity, humility, patience, gratitude) so the soul may draw near to Allah.

Ehsan (إحسان) — spiritual excellence — is defined by the Prophet (PBUH) himself in the famous Hadith of Jibril as "to worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, [know that] He surely sees you." It is the highest of the three dimensions of Din (Islam, Iman, Ehsan).

Qur'anic Evidence

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا * وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا

اردو ترجمہ: بےشک وہ کامیاب ہوا جس نے اپنے نفس کو پاک کیا اور وہ نامراد ہوا جس نے اسے آلودہ کیا۔

English: "He has certainly succeeded who purifies it [the soul], and he has failed who instills it [with corruption]."

إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوا وَّالَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ

اردو ترجمہ: بےشک اللہ ان لوگوں کے ساتھ ہے جو تقویٰ اختیار کرتے ہیں اور جو نیکوکار ہیں۔

English: "Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good [Muhsinun]."

Hadith Evidence — The Hadith of Jibril

أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ

اردو ترجمہ: یہ کہ تم اللہ کی عبادت اس طرح کرو گویا تم اسے دیکھ رہے ہو، اگر تم اسے نہیں دیکھتے تو وہ تمہیں دیکھ رہا ہے۔

English: "[Ehsan is] that you worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you."

Individual Effects

• Constant Allah-consciousness (Muraqabah) restrains sin even in complete privacy — the deepest form of self-regulation.
• Cultivates sincerity (Ikhlas), removing the desire to perform good deeds merely to be seen (Riya).
• Elevates the quality of worship from mechanical ritual to a living, conscious relationship with Allah.
• Produces humility, patience and gratitude, and protects against arrogance (Kibr) and despair.

Collective/Social Effects

• A society of self-purified individuals produces honest markets, trustworthy institutions and reduced corruption, since accountability no longer depends solely on external policing.
• Reduces social vices — backbiting, fraud, exploitation — that stem from an unpurified Nafs.
• Builds a culture of excellence (Ihsan) in every field of collective life — governance, civil service (see Theme VI) and commerce — not merely in ritual worship.
• The Prophet's (PBUH) own mission is explicitly tied to Tazkiyah (62:2), showing that purification of the individual is the engine behind the transformation of an entire society, as demonstrated by early Madinan society.
