Definition and Meaning

Risalat (رسالت) is the institution of Prophethood/Messengership — Allah's chosen method of guiding humanity by selecting specific individuals (Anbiya/Rusul) to convey His revealed guidance. Belief in Risalat is one of the six Articles of Faith (Iman) and the second part of the Shahadah affirms Muhammad (PBUH) specifically as Allah's final Messenger.

Distinction: Nabi vs Rasul

• Nabi (Prophet): receives revelation but is not necessarily commanded to convey a new law/scripture to a new people; may reaffirm and uphold an existing revealed law.
• Rasul (Messenger): receives revelation accompanied by a new scripture/law and an explicit command to convey it to a people who may not have received guidance before. Every Rasul is a Nabi, but not every Nabi is a Rasul.

English: "Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the Prophets."

English: "I have been favoured over the other Prophets in six ways" — the Prophet (PBUH) then listed concise, comprehensive speech; support through awe instilled in enemies; lawful spoils of war; the earth made a place of purity and prayer for him; being sent to all of mankind; and being the last of the Prophets.

Significance of Risalat

• Continuity: every Prophet from Adam to Muhammad (PBUH) conveyed the same essential message of Tawhid (21:25) — Risalat is one unbroken chain of guidance, not a series of unrelated religions.
• Mercy, not compulsion: Prophets are sent as bearers of glad tidings and warning, guiding rather than forcing belief (2:256).
• Finality: Muhammad (PBUH) seals the chain of Prophethood — no new Prophet or Messenger will come after him, and the Qur'an is preserved as the final, complete revelation (15:9).
• Uswah Hasanah: the Messenger's own life becomes the practical, lived model of the revealed guidance (33:21) — the link between abstract revelation and everyday human conduct.
