Book reference: Islamic Studies Question Bank, Theme I, p.4 — "Write a comprehensive note on Hajj and its spiritual, moral and social impacts."
Hajj (حج) literally means "to set out towards a destination with intent." In Shariah it is the pilgrimage to the Holy Ka'bah in Makkah, performed in the month of Dhul-Hijjah, comprising fixed rites — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, standing at Arafat (Wuquf), Muzdalifah, Rami (stoning the Jamarat), sacrifice (Qurbani) and Halq/Taqsir. It is the fifth pillar of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime upon every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able (Istita'ah).

English: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find thereto a way."
— Surah Āl-'Imran 3:97
English: "Hajj is [during] well-known months... And whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of Ihram] — there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj."
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:197
English: "And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass — that they may witness benefits for themselves."
— Surah Al-Hajj 22:27-28

English: "Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not commit any obscenity or transgression, will return [free of sin] as on the day his mother bore him."

English: "An accepted Hajj (Hajj Mabrur) has no reward except Paradise."

Hajj becomes fard only when all five conditions are met simultaneously:

Frequently tested. Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime. Any further performance is nafl (voluntary). In the Hanafi school a woman travelling the distance of safar should be accompanied by a mahram; the other schools differ, some permitting travel with a trustworthy group. State the Hanafi position and note that the schools differ.

| Type | How it is performed | Hady (sacrifice) |
|---|---|---|
| Ifrād | Hajj alone, without Umrah; remains in one Ihram | Not required |
| Tamattu' | Umrah first in the Hajj months, exit Ihram, then enter a fresh Ihram for Hajj | Required |
| Qirān | Umrah and Hajj combined in a single, continuous Ihram | Required |
Tamattu' is the form most commonly performed by pilgrims arriving from outside the Haram boundaries, including from Pakistan.
This is the single most examinable technical section of the topic, because the consequence of omission differs at each level.
