• Civilization (Tamaddun/Hadarah): the organised, external expression of a community's values in law, institutions, science, art and architecture.
• Culture (Thaqafah): the inner set of beliefs, values and customs that produces it.
• In short: culture is the soul, civilization is the body.

Vital Elements of Islamic Civilization

• Tawhid as the unifying worldview/epistemology.
• Shariah as the legal-ethical framework.
• The Qur'an and Arabic language as the intellectual and scriptural bond.
• The concept of a single, supra-national Ummah.
• A sustained tradition of scholarship

  • all under one ethical-legal umbrella.
